What to Expect at the Chattanooga Choo Choo

The Historic Campus Experience

All visits to the Choo Choo allow you to step back into the golden age of rail travel. Guests enter through the jaw-dropping main lobby, passing beneath an 85-foot freestanding brick dome before spilling out onto the former train platforms and passenger tracks.

  • The campus is completely free to enter and walk around
  • The original tracks host authentic vintage train cars, including restored Pullman carriages from the 1920s and 1960s now used as one-of-a-kind hotel rooms at The Hotel Chalet
  • Station Street offers a lively, open-container pedestrian experience
  • Guided historic trolley tours operate right out of the courtyard

The journey highlights early 20th-century preservation, architecture, and the legendary 1941 Glenn Miller song that made the station a household name worldwide.

The Glenn Miller Gardens

At the heart of the complex are the Glenn Miller Gardens. Spanning a full acre where locomotive tracks once sat, this peaceful urban oasis features beautifully manicured paths, water fountains, deep-shaded seating areas, and giant outdoor lawn games. It is a major highlight for visitors interested in photography, architecture, and relaxing mid-day strolls.

History, Culture & Natural Significance

The Chattanooga Choo Choo is deeply tied to early American transit history and roadside tourism. Originally welcoming millions of travelers as the first major railway link between the North and the South, it was saved from the wrecking ball in 1973 by local investors. Today, the terminal is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and remains an iconic piece of Americana.

Dining & Gift Shops

It's a convenient stop for keepsakes before heading back to your campsite.

Accessibility & Visitor Considerations

  • Some historic train cars have narrow steps and limited interior accessibility.
  • The Glenn Miller Gardens and many restaurant patios welcome leashed dogs (policies vary by venue, so check ahead).
  • Public restrooms are located inside the main terminal building.
