Visiting Cloudland Canyon State Park
Cloudland Canyon State Park sits on the western edge of Lookout Mountain, where Sitton's Gulch Creek has carved a thousand-foot-deep gorge into the Cumberland Plateau. One of Georgia's largest and most scenic state parks, it's home to sandstone cliffs, wild caves, cascading waterfalls, and over 60 miles of trails, making it a top day-trip destination for hikers, bikers, and anyone craving a real mountain view.

Basecamp Tip
The Waterfalls Trail is stunning but unforgiving, with a 600-step staircase on the return climb. If you want big views without the burn, the short Overlook Trail near the main parking lot delivers a postcard-worthy canyon shot in under ten minutes.
What to Do at Cloudland Canyon
Hiking & Trails
With over 60 miles of trails for hikers and 30 miles for mountain bikers, there's a route here for every energy level.
- Overlook Trail: A short, easy walk to the park's most photographed canyon view, perfect for a quick stop.
- Waterfalls Trail: A strenuous but rewarding hike down to two cascading waterfalls; includes a steep staircase descent and climb back out.
- West Rim Loop Trail: A moderate 5-mile loop tracing the canyon's edge with sweeping overlooks along the way.

Caving & Underground Exploration
Cloudland Canyon is home to wild, undeveloped caves. Cave tours are offered by reservation only, so guests interested in spelunking should book ahead through the park office.
Biking & Disc Golf
Mountain bikers can ride the Five Points Recreation Area or the Cloudland Connector Trail, with bike rentals available on-site. The park also features a disc golf course for a low-key afternoon activity.
Other Activities
The park offers a stocked fishing pond, horseback riding trails, picnic areas, and geocaching routes, making it just as suited to a relaxed family outing as it is to a serious hike.
Dining on the Way
The drive winds through small mountain towns, so plan your stops along the way rather than expecting much right at the park. In Trenton, Thatcher's and Los 3 Amigos are solid options for breakfast or lunch on your way in. The Canyon Grill, just outside the park entrance, is a local favorite and the closest sit-down option to Cloudland Canyon itself. On the way back, Choo-Choo's in Chickamauga is a great dinner stop before heading home. The Canyon Quick Stop, half a mile from the park entrance on Highway 136, is also handy for snacks, drinks, and last-minute supplies.
Know Before You Go
Parking & Fees
A daily ParkPass is required for every vehicle, currently $10 per vehicle. No timed-entry reservation is needed to enter the park, unlike some Western state and national parks; just pay the ParkPass fee on arrival. Overnight campers pay the ParkPass fee only once per stay, regardless of how many days they're there. Annual passes are also available for frequent visitors.
Hours
The park is open daily from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., with gates locking promptly at 10:00 p.m. and no late access. The park office is open 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily.
Visitor Center Note
The main Visitor Center is currently under construction. A temporary Visitor Center is operating out of the Group Lodge; follow the red and white signs once inside the park.
Road Work Note
Road work is ongoing at the park entrance, with one-lane traffic and flaggers in place during the day. Plan for a short delay when entering.
Footwear & Conditions
Sturdy, closed-toe shoes are a must, especially on the Waterfalls Trail, where wet rock and stairs can be slippery. Wading or climbing on the waterfalls themselves is not permitted for visitor safety.
Pet Policy
Leashed pets are welcome on the trails, though check current park rules for any seasonal restrictions before bringing pets into caves or near wildlife areas.
