Winter Near Chattanooga
The Scenic City lights up for the holidays. Rock City turns into a glowing garden, Santa rides the rails, and Christmas markets fill the riverfront with twinkling lights and warm Glühwein. Here's how we'd spend a holiday week near Chattanooga, all within an easy drive of Basecamp.

Basecamp Tip
The big holiday events sell out, especially on weekends. Book North Pole Limited and Rock City tickets as soon as you lock in your dates, then plan markets and riverfront fun around them.
Best Holiday Things to Do in Chattanooga
Holiday Lights
When the sun goes down, the mountain glows.
Enchanted Garden of Lights at Rock City: Rock City's trails turn into a winter wonderland, with Toyland and a nativity in the Grand Corridor, the swing-a-long bridge lit up at night, and Fairyland Caverns aglow. Santa visits nightly through December 23, and hot chocolate waits at Carter Cliffs. It runs nightly November 13 through December 31 (closed December 24). Tickets are online only with timed entry; prices vary by night.
Santa Trains
Chattanooga's rail history gets a holiday twist.
North Pole Limited: A Chattanooga Christmas tradition since 1999. Board a heated, decorated vintage train at the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum's Grand Junction Depot for a ride to the North Pole, with hot chocolate, cookies, holiday stories, and a visit from Santa. Every family gets a keepsake ornament, and every child gets a bell. It runs November 13 through December 23. Traditional seats start at $38; private-table and Santa's Private Car upgrades are also available. Arrive 30 minutes early, and book early; it sells out.

Christmas Markets
Shop local with a cup of Glühwein in hand.
Christkindlmarkt: Old-World holiday markets with artisan gifts, festive food, twinkling lights, and Glühwein, hosted on four November weekends. Hours are 10 am to 7 pm Saturdays and 11 am to 6 pm Sundays.
Collegedale (November 7 to 8): The Commons, 4950 Swinyar Drive
Signal Mountain (November 14 to 15): Mountain Arts Community Center, 809 Kentucky Ave.
Coolidge Park (November 21 to 22): Along the Tennessee River
Coolidge Park (November 28 to 29): Thanksgiving weekend, with a new artisan lineup
Christmas at the Choo-Choo (December 5 to 6 and 12 to 13): Holiday shopping, seasonal drinks, and music inside the decorated historic Chattanooga Choo Choo. Open 10 am to 6 pm Saturdays and 10 am to 4 pm Sundays.
Last Minute Market (December 19 to 20): Still need gifts? Artisan finds, festive treats, and live music at The Commons in Collegedale.
On the Riverfront
Reindeer on the Riverfront and Lighted Boat Parade (November 27): The day after Thanksgiving, Coolidge Park hosts live reindeer from 4 to 6:30 pm and photos with Santa from 4:30 to 7:30 pm, plus a hot cocoa bar, mini-train rides, and face painting. Decorated boats light up the Tennessee River from 7 to 8 pm, followed by fireworks. Free admission. New this year: the event moves across the river from Ross's Landing to Coolidge Park.
Beyond the Holidays
Not every day needs a holiday event. Hit a winter trail, lace up your skates, or warm up indoors.
Winter Skating at Stable 41: Lace up at Fort Oglethorpe's covered rink, just minutes from Basecamp. It runs November 21 through January 17, Wednesday through Sunday from 4 to 8 pm. The surface is synthetic ice, so it skates like the real thing, rain or shine.
Ford’s Garage: Chilly evening? Warm up with burgers, comfort food, and craft beer in a 1920s service-station setting, complete with vintage Fords. It’s near Hamilton Place and about 12 minutes from Basecamp.
Cloudland Canyon State Park: Bare trees reveal canyon walls you can't see in summer, and the waterfalls run full after winter rain.
Reflection Riding: Gravel loop walks and the red wolves, without the crowds. The Welcome Center is open Tuesday through Saturday.
Tennessee Aquarium: A warm, indoor pick for a cold or rainy day, with river and ocean galleries under one roof downtown.
Know Before You Go
Book ahead: North Pole Limited and the Garden of Lights sell out on weekends. Buy tickets online before you go.
Bundle up: Mountain nights get cold, and Rock City's trails are outdoors. Layers, gloves, and good shoes help.
Protect your rig: Overnight temperatures can dip below freezing. A heated water hose and a plan for your tanks make cold nights easy.
Check dates every year: Holiday schedules shift. Confirm on each venue's site before you go.
